I-Light and circuit-based networks
On behalf of all consortium members—including 31 independent and seven public colleges and universities—the IHETS Board of Directors provides input, direction, and counsel related to network operations and future directions. The broad representation and expertise of the board and its committee members help ensure the needs of all institutions are considered and addressed
Member support and technical consulting
IHETS provides consortium members with technical support 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays. Services include providing answers, information, and direction for using emerging technologies like podcasting in the classroom, developing campus IT disaster plans, recovering from network outages, and complying with the FCC’s Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA).
Network security and firewalls
Certified security engineers advise consortium members about security threats, alerts, and best practices, including how to:
— Plan and implement comprehensive internal/external security policies
— Develop disaster recovery plans and respond to critical IT incidents
— Plan, implement, and manage network firewalls
— Ensure consistent, appropriate security to protect technology assets, databases, and student records.
Network monitoring
IHETS has developed and built a high-performance suite of tools to assist consortium members with their network management and monitoring needs.
Primary and secondary DNS
Domain name service (DNS) is one of the core operating technologies of the Internet. It provides a simple mechanism to translate Internet protocol addresses into a Web address like the URL http://www.ihets.org.
Co-location
IHETS offers member and affiliate member institutions the ability to co-locate their equipment in a secured environment offering environmental control, fire suppression, surge protection, backup power supply, and after-hours support.
